Worship and Praise Songs are healthy
Scientists have examined a large Frankfurt church choir. The result is astonishing: After an intensive vocal rehearsal, the singers had significantly improved immunoglobulin A values. In addition, their mood after the rehearsal was much more positive than before.
Why is singing so good? Just physically speaking, singing pumps the body full of oxygen. When you are stressed or scared, breathing becomes shallower and faster. Quite the opposite with singing: Breathing steadily and slowly relaxes the body. But singing is also good for the mind, because it is an expression of feelings. Language alone is relatively complicated, and finding the right words is difficult. It is almost impossible to explain feelings. A melancholic song, however, can do it in a few minutes. Especially singing in a group is perceived as positive.
The third level
But there is something else very important in praise: God himself. Whoever sings of God’s greatness turns his gaze away from everyday life and towards God. Whoever sings of what God does well can become grateful and joyful. And the most important thing: You meet God. Worship is not one-sided. It is not that man worships all alone and then has done his duty. It is in worship that God, the Creator, and the worshipper meet. It is a great happiness that man has the opportunity to show God his feelings personally. And the good thing is that man is not indifferent to God. He consoles, gives new courage, joy and a future. The Story of “Heart of Worship”
We live in a critical world. Films, music, restaurants – nothing is safe from a sharp, analytical eye. But what happens when this mentality creeps into our worship? This is what happened in the 90s in a London suburb. This is the origin of the worship classic “Heart of Worship” by Matt Redman. It reminds us of what worship is really about.
In 1993, a movement called “Soul Survivor” emerged in the suburbs of London. Young Christians wanted to bring the Gospel to others in their worship services. Matt Redman, who is known for his songs “Heart of Worship”, “Once Again” or “Blessed Be Your Name”, leads worship there. Pastor Mike Pilavachi talks about a realization and how the song “Heart of Worship” came about. | Worship and Praise Songs
Good Intentions
“In our church we always wanted to have a lot of room for worship. During worship we could pour out our hearts before God and experience how God touched us. But at some point we realized that things were not going the way they used to. We did not know exactly why. From the outside, everything looked good: The musicians were tuning their instruments, the mixer was on time. We always had a worship block where the songs of the cross were about and everyone had the opportunity to clean up between themselves and God. To create a good atmosphere we had no chairs and the light was dimmed. But somehow the spark was lost. We sang the same songs, but it was as if we were far away from God.
In search of the error
I listened carefully.
Was it the worship band? Suddenly I understood what was going on: we had become worship usurpers instead of being part of it. Inside we were giving notes to the worship team: “Oh no, not that song again.” “I can’t hear the bass.” “Well, she sings much better than he does.” We had made the band a show act and made ourselves an audience. We’d forgotten that God alone is the audience and each of us has something to contribute. In the Bible, sacrifice was necessary to worship God. Our body is the temple (Romans, chapter 12, verse 1) and we are called to bring a sacrifice of praise (Hebrews, chapter 13, verse 15). The scales fell from our eyes: praise is not a spectator sport. It is not a product that is formed according to the taste of the consumers. It is not about what we get out of it, it is only about God alone.
The turnaround
We needed a drastic change. To really learn what worship means to us, we dismissed the worship band. Then we sat down together and said: If no one brings in a worship offering, then we will be silent. And in the beginning we were indeed silent. It was a painful process. We had to learn not to rely on a band. But little by little a silent but intimate worship grew. We began to bring in our prayers, Bible verses, prophetic words, thanksgiving, praise and songs. One of us began to sing a song and all the others joined in. And then another one started to sing a song. Life came back. We met God again. We had let go of all our comforts and were able to worship with all our hearts. And when we learned that, we brought the band back. | Worship and Praise Songs
Matt brought back a song that he had written during that time. The first time we sang it, I cried. The words expressed exactly how we felt. Everyone is called upon to make a sacrifice to God himself. It changes everyone.”
Lyrics
The words to “The Heart of Worship”
When the music fades
All is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
Something that’s of worth
That will bless your heart.
I’ll bring you more than a song
For a song in itself
Is not what you have required.
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You’re looking into my heart.
I’m coming back to the heart of worship
And it’s all about you
it’s all about you Jesus.
I’m sorry, lord, for the thing I’ve made it
When it’s all about you
It’s all about you, Jesus
King of endless worth
No one could express
How much you deserve
Though I’m weak and poor
All I have is yours
